Nathan Walton Managing Director of JSW Insurance has recently decided to take on an enormous challenge that has been set up by Donna Louise Children’s Hospice, in Stoke. The Tower to Tower Challenge will see Nathan and a team of celebrities and business leaders tackle a gruelling 450 nautical mile open-water row from Tower Bridge in London to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
This challenge is branded by many as the “Everest of open-water rowing”. This shows what an enormous challenge they will face. The rowers will be battling many different elements including the tidal effects of both the Thames and the Siene during the 36 hour channel crossing. They will also have navigate their way through one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, battle sea sickness and rough seas.
The team aim to complete this challenge in 6 days, rowing 2 hours on and then 2 hours off until the challenge is completed. Rowing up the Siene can only be attempted on the spring tide, this means that the rowers only have a 4 hour window on only 3 days of the year to navigate the mouth of the Siene at Le Havre, France.
This means more people have stood at the summit of Everest than have completed this challenge which just emphasis the great difficulty rowers will face.
Nathan knows he will face many difficult moments during this challenge and has said that when the going gets tough he will focus his mind on those families he and the rest of the crew are trying to help and those parents who won’t see their children reach adulthood.
The epic journey starts at Tower Bridge at St. Catherine’s Docks on Sunday 24th May and tides and weather permitting, finishes in Paris against the backdrop of The Eiffel Tower on 29th or 30th May 2015.
The Tower to Tower challenge aims to raise awareness of the challenges many children with shortened life expectancy and the difficulties their families face which includes severe sleep deprivation. Many children with life threatening conditions require 24 hour care so lack of sleep can become a real issue for both parents and carers who look after them .
The Donna Louise Children’s Hospice does a brilliant job in providing respite for parents and carers so they can get the rest they need, safe with the knowledge that their children will be well looked after.
The team aims to raise £90,000 to support the work of 2 Children’s Nurses at the Hospice who can provide specialist care and support to life threatened children and their families and ensure they get the vital respite care they need.
Melanie Williams, Head of High Value Partnerships at the Hospice, said: “We are very excited about this event – it’s bigger than anything we’ve done before, and we hope that people will support the team and help us raise the vital funds we need to support our children and families.”
The charity is calling on people and businesses to get involved in Tower to Tower.
Melanie added: “We are looking for more corporate sponsors who would like to make a difference by supporting this event. We need to raise £200 for every mile we row, and we would love businesses to sponsor as many miles as they can.”
Please give as generously as you can and help life limited children and their families.
